Speculations have pointed that the sixth generation of Apple's iPod touch would come after the holidays, according to the Christian Post.

Reality check: Christmas has already come, yet the highly-anticipated gadget did not even cast a portion of its shadow. Now, all the more we're in position of thinking that the Cupertino giant is finally ditching its compact media player once and for all.

Of course, that would be painful for those looking forward to the next iPod's arrival. But the Christian Post went on to cite another report suggesting that Apple has been basking in the success of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus -- who needs another iPod touch now?

Even on Christmas Day, 51% of the world's activated devices were Apple-made, Variety noted. Citing data from the Yahoo-owned research firm Flurry, the outlet added that Samsung came second at 18%, Microsoft's Nokia unit at 5.8%, Sony at 1.6% and LG at 1.4%.

Needless to say, Apple appears to have taken its competitors' holiday away. Fifty-one percent suggested that half of the connected world may have talked to Siri, stored files in iCloud and enjoyed taking photos with an iSight camera.

Now we'll have to think -- think hard, specially if you're an iPod follower. If Apple has not unveiled the iPod touch 6G in December, will it be safe to speculate that it comes soon after New Year's Day?

After all, reports have claimed that it arrives post-holidays, so the least we could count is the day following the night when fireworks and party poppers blow out.

Well, we could be looking at the upcoming CES or MWC events. But with Apple, we can also expect a separate gathering, just like what it did for the recent iPhones (6 and 6 Plus) and iPads (Air 2 and Mini 3).

Looking at the iPod touch 6G's possible features, CrossMap reported that the device likely sports the ones already found in the iPhone 6.

As we have previously noted, the sixth-generation iPod touch is rumored to pack Retina Display, a dual-core A5 processor, a radio app, larger storage options, Apple Pay and Touch ID fingerprint system. A possible A9 processor is also being eyed for the device.

In terms of price, we have earlier predicted that the device would retail (quite obviously) less than the iPhone 6. At the moment, the iPhone flagship starts at $199 for its 16 GB version. For more information, head over here.

We've already asked this, but with new rumors popping here and there, we want to ask you again: Is an iPod touch still necessary?
