Sony Pictures' upcoming female-led "Ghostbusters" reboot is still in the planning stages, but Director Paul Feig has good news to share with fans, Den of Geek reported.

The original "Ghosbusters" film was released in 1984 by Sony Pictures starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Huson and more. It was followed by 1989's "Ghostbusters II," and despite the success of both films, a third film never got around to being produced. Last year, reports came out of a franchise reboot, this time being headlined by women and directed by Feig.

Feig is optimistic about the future of the reboot and told Empire that they had a lot planned for the film.

During the interview, the director was quick to explain that they still wanted to pay tribute to the original films.

"We're not recreating the old movie, but we want to do just enough fun nods that the fans will go, 'oh, okay, they're acknowledging the other movie existed'," he said, adding that his all-female ghost busting team were not a parody of the original.

"I like to watch parodies, but I don't want to do them because they're too referential," he explained.

Feig also shared that he and co-writer Katie Dippold alrady have a setting in mind.

"For me, it's such a New York movie, and the biggest sin would be to pull it out of there," he said. "I just love New York and, selfishly, I just want to shoot in New York."

The director wasn't able to share much about the cast and the plot though, but he did confirm previous reports that actress and comedienne Melissa McCarthy has been in talks to join the film, according to IGN.

"There's a lot to work out," he simply said.

Another actress being rumored to play a part is "Pitch Perfect" star Rebel Wilson, according to Den of Geek.

At the end of the interview, Feig also mentioned the infamous Sony hacking incident, where details about the previously planned "Ghostbusters 3" came out. He said he and Dippold were being more cautious now, working on laptops and passing flash drives.

"It's very old school. We're using paper, god forbid," he said.

The upcoming "Ghostbusters" reboot has no estimated release date yet. As production moves forward, hopefully Sony and Feig will be able to share more news in the coming months.
