Dallas Mavericks' point guard Rajon Rondo is facing a one-game suspension after he shouted at Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle during a game against the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday.

It was reported by USA Today that Rondo did not follow instructions from the coach during the third quarter of the game. Soon after, Carlisle called a timeout and shouted at the point guard.

Rondo, according to ESPN, responded by shouting back at Carlisle then the two exchanged heated words during the timeout.

The Mavs star was then taken out of the game and did not play for the remaining 20 minutes in their victory against the Raptors.

He was replaced by backup point guard Devin Harris after the timeout while Rondo witnessed the rest of the game on the bench.

In a post-game interview, Carlisle said he and the player just had a "difference in opinion" and that he did not allow him to play again because as a coach, he decides on the gameplay of the Mavs.

"There was an exchange, and then in my mind, it was over," Carlisle was quoted as saying.

When asked about the incident, ESPN said Rondo just referred them to Carlisle saying "Discuss with Rick."

ESPN sources said that the altercation between Rondo and Carlisle "had been building" and it concerned play-calling responsibilities. The reports said that former point guard Jason Kidd also had the same concern on Carlisle but it never led to this type of outrage during a game.

Rondo joined the team in January after he was traded from the Boston Celtics. ESPN said that he has averaged 9 points, 6.2 assists and 2.9 turnovers in 25 games with the team.

"I'm able to adapt and adjust to anything. Coach does a lot of the play calling, and just go from there," he told ESPN.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tried to "downplay" the incident between the coach and the point guard saying that "S--- happens."

"Not the first time, not the last time. It'll happen again. It's not just Rajon. It's a long season. In my 15 years, I've seen it happen more times than I can count, and we survive every time," Cuban said, as quoted by ESPN.

For his part, Dirk Nowitzki said called the incident between Carlisle and Rondo "unfortunate."

"We won the game, but stuff like that is never good. It's unfortunate, but it does happen. It's how the team responds. It's how the team moves forward, how both sides move forward and make the best out of it," Nowitzki told ESPN.

Mavs players are certainly hoping that everything will be okay between their head coach and Rondo as it may affect their performance as a team.
