The next iteration of the iconic iPhone may finally be at par with professional cameras.

According to recent reports, Apple has already acquired LinX Computational Imaging Ltd., an Israel-based camera tech firm that specializes in "multi-aperture imaging technology."

As told by the AppleInsider, word of the deal came first from the Wall Street Journal, which indicated that the acquisition came to a price of around $20 million.

For those who may not know, LinX manufactures miniature cameras with incredible performance in different areas, BGR noted. These include low-light situations, HDR, refocusing, color fidelity and shutter lag, among others.

The idea of the next iPhone stems from the premise written in LinX's site, "LinX cameras are significantly smaller than any camera on the market today, leading the way to DSLR performance in slim handsets."

Aside from 2D images, LinX cameras also capture 3D information to provide more interesting results. The site went on, "We allow Apps to freely use the 3D information captured by our camera to achieve amazing new features such as the ability to refocus an image after it has been captured, measurement of the true dimensions of objects, 3D object modeling and real time background replacement for video calls."

BGR took note of LinX's endorsed competitive advantages over traditional mobile photography, which include: (1) biometric 3D face recognition, (2) automatic background removal, (3) high-quality control of autofocus in video mode, (4) 3D object modeling and (5) augmented reality, among others.

To date, Apple is using Sony's sensors for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, GSMArena recalled.

Rumors surrounding the next iPhones' DLSR-like camera qualities have been up for a while now. It all seems to have started from John Gruber's account via The Talk Show (Daring Fireball), where he said, "The specific thing I heard is that next year's camera might be the biggest camera jump ever."

"I don't even know what sense this makes, but I've heard that it's some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery," the tipster spilled.

With latest predictions axing the existence of an iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone 6c, the best candidate to sport a revamped camera would be the iPhone 7.

Purported to sell for at least $649, the iPhone 7 is also rumored to pack a bezel-free display, a sapphire screen-alternative, sidewall displays, 2 GB of RAM, 64 GB starting storage and wireless charging support.

In addition, the device is touted to possess a capacitive Force Touch sensor, including waterproofing abilities.

Are you looking forward to see DLSR-capabilities in the next iPhone?
