It's been five years since Rockstar Games released "Red Dead Redemption" and as of this moment, no official word has been released regarding its much awaited sequel. Naturally, fans of the game are wondering what the game developer has in store for the franchise.

"Red Dead Redemption" serves as a successor of "Red Dead Revolver" and was set in 1911, AttackOfTheFanboy wrote. The game's storyline features John Marston returning to his wife and son to live in peace. That happiness, however, was cut short when Marston's enemies followed him home and ended up with the protagonist sacrificing himself to save his family.

Years later, John's son Jack Marston takes over as the game's lead character, vowing to carry out revenge on the people who murdered his father. This payback arc prompted the title "Red Dead Redemption," AttackOfTheFanboy noted.

Aside from its captivating story, what's special about "Red Dead Redemption" is its various side mission available for the players, as well as the option to just play around and kill minor characters just like in "Grand Theft Auto," the news outlet added. The game also offered 16-player online multiplayer setup.

Bidnessetc reported that the missions, side quests, cover mechanics, and storyline of "Red Dead Redemption" made the gamers happy, giving way to a request for a sequel. Expectations say that the follow-up could be available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

"Red Dead Redemption" had a DLC expansion release, with the most notable titled "Undead Nightmare" which eventually gained a standalone release, AttackOfTheFanboy added.

As for "Red Dead Redemption 2," AttackOfTheFanboy claimed that executives at Take-Two Interactive hinted that the game is going to become a series. News about the alleged project, however, is still not around, with Rockstar San Diego keeping itself mum over the whole thing. The studio hasn't released a new game since "Undead Nightmare" was expanded and only contributed their RAGE Engine in "Grand Theft Auto V" and "Max Payne 3."

If Rockstar is indeed working on the highly anticipated "Red Dead Redemption 2," it could have a possible release sometime in 2016 or 2017, AttackOfTheFanboy wrote. There's a possibility that the developer will use the E3 in June 2015 to make their big announcement regarding the game.

Express UK also pointed out Take-Two Interactive's impressive financial results for the fourth quarter of 2015. The news outlet added, "The briefing also revealed that an unannounced AAA game will be released in the current fiscal year, which means a possible launch for the likes of 'Red Dead Redemption' or 'Mafia 3' before March 31, 2016."
