Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was kicked out of the Spanish Club on Monday after the team failed to win a major trophy this season.

According to Yahoo Sports, the coach was released despite his popularity among players and fans after he carried the team to bag its 10th European Cup title last year. However, this was not the fate of Madrid for this season since they finished second in the Spanish league and lost during the Champions League semifinals to Juventus.

Despite the team's triumph at the Club World Cup, the achievement is said to be not enough to satisfy the team directors.

Ancelotti's firing was announced by club president Florentino Perez after a board meeting. Perez added that the coach's successor will be announced next week.

The club president reportedly explained that they had to make a ''very difficult decision'' since the Italian coach has already been so close to them and was an important part of their 10th World Cup victory.

The New York Times reports that Perez is looking forward to move on and have "a new impetus that will enable us to win new titles and achieve our maximum competitive level in a new phase."

Perez noted that they are now hoping the new coach could speak Spanish though he refused to give hints on who it will be.

On his Twitter account, Ancelotti said he wants to fondly remember the time he spent with the team.

"I'd like to keep in mind this two fantastic years at Real Madrid. Thanks to the club, the supporters and my players," the former coach tweeted.

Ancelotti is considered to be one of the most successful football coaches because of his achievements in Milan, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain prior to working for Real Madrid two years ago.

Ancelotti's agent, Ernesto Bronzetti, told ESPN that the ex-Real Madrid coach will be taking a break first after this.

"At the moment, Ancelotti wants to take a years' rest. That is his intention," said Bronzetti.

Bronzetti added that Madrid players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric wanted to keep Ancelotti on the team and that some of them were teary-eyed when they learned about the news.

Meanwhile, the coach being eyed to replace Ancelotti is Rafael Benitez, as per the BBC. Sources said Benitez is expected to be installed as the team's new coach on Sunday.

The 55-year old, former Liverpool manager has not yet signed a contract with the team but is reportedly negotiating with them.

Benitez can surely speak Spanish as this is his mother tongue. Additionally, he once managed a team in his home country prior to bagging two La Liga titles and UEFA Cup with Balencia.
