The identity of Andy Serkis' mysterious motion-capture character in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has been revealed.

StarWars.com reported the news, indicating its interview with iconic photographer Annie Leibovitz about her brand-new Vanity Fair photoshoot for the upcoming film. According to the news outlet, Serkis will be playing a being called Supreme Leader Snoke.

More details about the actor's character are yet to be revealed. Aside from Leibovitz's mention of Snoke, only a photo of Serkis in motion-capture gear was featured in StarWars.com.

The first teaser trailer of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" released last November featured the 51-year-old actor voicing Snoke. Entertainment Weekly noted that Serkis' voice in the sneak peek sounded deep and ominous, but he clarified that it was all natural.

"That is the character," Serkis told Entertainment Weekly. "There's no digital manipulation. That's just me."

The movie star, known for his performances in films using performance-capture technology, previously starred in "The Lord of the Rings" franchise as Gollum and in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" as Caesar. When asked for more details about his character in the forthcoming "Star Wars" legendary franchise, Serkis said that Snoke has been "through some stuff" in his time in the galaxy, the news outlet wrote.

Aside from Serkis, the film also stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker reprising their respective characters from the original trilogy, ComingSoon.net listed. Newcomers include John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong'o (Maz Kanata), and Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma). Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong, and Miltos Yerolemou also have roles in the upcoming movie.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is set 30 years after the events of 1983's "Return of the Jedi," ComingSoon.net wrote.

Vanity Fair's June issue features "Star Wars" characters consisting of Ford's Han Solo, Boyega's Finn, Ridley's Rey, Chewbacca, and BB-8 aboard the Millenium Falcon. The cover issue boasts of a batch of photos showcasing the cast.

According to Abrams, being handed a project as big as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was no easy feat.

"It is, without question, an intense and terrifying prospect," Abrams said told MTV News. "The opportunity, I think, is greater than the fear, greater than the risk. I'm more excited about the work that everyone has done in the movie and the incredible cast."

He also talked about how making the movie was an "amazing experience" not just for him, but also for everyone.

"There was a weird buzz in the air when we were making this movie. But we were all just aware how hard we had to work to make it something worthy of people's time," Abrams said, as quoted in a SlashFilm.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is slated for release in theaters on December 18, 2015.
