Struggling to find the winning formula this season, the Knicks might finally need to push the restart button and start thinking about their future.
Thought Anthony has remained a prolific scorer, his inability to lead his team over the hump and upcoming free agency next summer might give the Knicks enough reasons to pull the trigger on a trade.
ESPN sports analyst Stephen A. Smith believed the Knicks should trade Melo before he hits the free agency market. With several teams looking to get the services of one of the most explosive scorers in the game, it would be hard for the Knicks to convince the All-Star forward to stay put in the Big Apple.
According to Bleacher Report's Jared Zwerling, the Knicks have to trade Anthony before it's too late, and apparently, the Clippers are the only ballclub in the league that can facilitate the deal.
"The overall cloudy Knicks picture suggests that [Carmelo] Anthony might force his hand to make the one and only trade that's best for him this season and beyond: going to the Clippers," Zwerling stated in its article via SB Nation.
"In that scenario, a compelling blockbuster deal that fits money-wise would be Anthony and shooting guard Iman Shumpert for [Blake] Griffin, small forward Jared Dudley and center Ryan Hollins. A deal-breaker could be a future first-round pick to the Knicks," he added.
Anthony has been longing for an All-Star caliber point guard ever since he joined New York three years ago, but he only got an inconsistent Raymond Felton up to this point.
With the Clippers, Anthony's point guard problem will be instantly solved because of fellow Olympian and MVP frontrunner Chris Paul. According to a scout, the inclusion of Anthony will make the Clippers a legitimate NBA contender.
"Now, the Clippers are a team," a source close to the Clippers said of that proposition via Bleacher Report. "Right now, they're not good enough with the Heat or the Pacers. Blake is not good enough."
On the other hand, the Knicks will have a highlight reel power forward in Griffin. Though many basketball pundits criticized Griffin for having limited moves in the post, the 24-year old forward still has many years ahead of him to polish his game.
Whether this trade is ever going to happen is anyone's guess at this point. But this trade scenario is expected to gain more traction as the February trade deadline draws closer.
