A crowd of more than 800 people lined up during the early hours of the morning outside the Maranatha Baptist Church on Sunday as a sign of solidarity for Jimmy Carter, 90. The former president had volunteered to do double duty for his 689th Sunday Lesson.

According to People Magazine, the much loved humanitarian seemed to be in high spirits and filled the room with his positive energy despite the fact that he had recently announced the devastating developments of his cancer in his liver.

"Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," he said in the interview, "I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare."

The humanitarian, who aims to continue fundraising for The Carter Center in order to build houses for Nepal, was energetic all throughout the session. According to People Magazine, Carter even volunteered to teach a second class when he learned that the small venue in Maranatha Baptist Church wasn't enough to accommodate everyone.

"He wanted to accommodate as many people as possible," Rev. Jeremy Shoulta, who is the church's pastor. "He voluntarily chose to do that, and ended up being able to teach just about everyone who showed up."

The Guardian said that Carter was being his usual humorous self and that all who were in attendance were taken by his positivity and good humor. Carter called Plains, Georgia his "haven" and that it was only fitting that he would come back here.

"My roots are there, and my closest friends are there, and our little church is there, which is very important to me," Carter said in an interview. "So Plains has just been the focal point of our life."

Carter's wife, Rosalynn, was also present during the event. Carter had previously disclosed in an interview with People that his wife was the "scared for him."

"She was beaming," said Shoulta. "She was glad to see him teaching again and additionally, several members of his family were present. So all the more reason for her to be smiling and to enjoy the morning."

The Nobel Prize Winner does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon for his humanitarian work. Close friends even say that he is handling his challenge quite well despite the grim updates.

"I have been as blessed as any human being in the world," Carter said in an interview with People. "I've had a wonderful life. I've had thousands of friends ... an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence."
