The good news is that international researchers finally found out how to avoid having a hangover. The bad news is that water will not help you. The worse news is that there is actually no cure for it, so the only solution you have been, well, to drink less alcohol.

According to a report from BBC, a Dutch research concluded that the only way to prevent getting a hangover is to drink less alcohol, which doesn't do much for partygoers.

The study presented at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology conference asked more than 800 students how they relieved their hangover symptoms. It was found that neither food nor water had any positive effect.

A team of international researchers from the Netherlands and Canada surveyed these students' drinking habits, with 54% or 826 Dutch students are prone to eating food after drinking alcohol in the hopes of getting rid of their hangovers.

On the same note, more than two-thirds of the students drink water while drinking while more than half rehydrate before going to bed. But while these groups reported a slight improvement on how they felt compared to those who didn't drink water, there was no real difference on the severity of their hangovers.

The New Zealand Herald reported that of the more than 1,600 Dutch and Canadian students asked to participate in the study, four-fifths of those who claimed not to suffer from hangovers are light drinkers with blood alcohol levels of less than 0.1 percent, while those who drink heavily -- with blood alcohol levels of over 0.2 percent, are almost always subject to massive headaches.

Lead author Dr.JorisVerster from Utrecht University said, "The more you drink, the more likely you are to get a hangover."

So what does water do to your body in times of excessive alcohol consumption? Verster said, "Drinking water may help against thirst and a dry mouth, but it will not take away the misery, the headache and the nausea."

So yes, this means that there is "no cure" for a hangover.

Dr.Verster also noted, however, that part of the problem is that scientists still don't know what causes a hangover in the first place, making it difficult to find a cure. The next step, however, is to carry out a more controlled trial.

Dr. Michael Bloomfield of the University College in London said that the economic costs of alcohol abuse costs hundreds of billions every year, which is the main reason why this study is important.

But for now, Bloomfield put it simply: "Whilst further research is needed, this new research tells us that the answer is simple - drink less."
