In an effort to push its computer sales forward, Intel is now launching the sixth generation of its processors dubbed as Skylake. The new line of processors are expected to be more powerful and more energy-efficient than its predecessors.

Intel's Skylake chips are not only aimed at desktop computers; it will also be available for notebooks and laptops. Most customized computer set-ups use Intel's processors compared to its rival AMD, but the former is still pushing to increase its sales in the computer sector, according to the Wall Street Journal

PC sales have seen a steady decline since the boom of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and other mobile devices. While Intel undoubtedly dominates the PC sector, the decline in PC sales also means bad news for them. WSJ reported that more people are now shifting to use mobile devices for their everyday tasks such as signing in on social media sites, watching movies and even playing video games.

Desktop computers are more powerful than their mobile counterparts, but they lack one thing that all users love, portability. In the past, nobody could watch a movie while commuting. The tech simply wasn't fit yet for viewing high-definition videos or even to simply stream them on a small phone. However, technology rapidly progresses and now smartphones have FHD screens and fast LTE connections.

WSJ reported that Intel is now hoping that the new Skylake processors will be able to revive its once soaring sales. The tech giant is planning to launch 48 Skylake-based chips in the following months. Some high-end gaming rigs are now offered with some of these Skylake processors along with the new Windows 10 operating system.  For laptops and notebooks, the first products that will include Skylake chips will be shown-off at the IFA trade show in Berlin on Friday.

Skylake boasts pretty impressive features and capabilities. For one, Intel claims that it can handle 4K videos much better than beforeaccording to BBC News.  4K videos can't be really enjoyed without a monitor with 4K resolution, which is still kind of a niche market.

Intel is now allowing overclocking of the Skylake chips on mobile devices as well. This wasn't much of a problem on desktop computers as aftermarket coolers could be used to cool off the excess heat. However, on laptops it wasn't a good idea as the structure was closed and it could overheat easily. Since the new Skylake is claimed to consume less energy, there would also be less heat.

BBC News reported that Skylake also supports facial recognition software for logging in on computers. It also has its own Ready Mode technology that allows the users to wake the computer through voice recognition.

Time will tell whether these new Skylake processors and chips will be able to bring back PC sales in the following months or years. Desktop computers aren't obsolete, but users now prefer mobile devices.
