"Homeland" star Damien Lewis was "given an unofficial nod" to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond, an unnamed source told the Sunday Mirror.

While bets have been placed on several factors, a recent report from the Sunday Mirror revealed that Lewis has received a "nod" for the role.

"If Daniel Craig leaves, it's Damian Lewis who will be crowned the new Bond. He is seen as an all-around international star who is perfect for the role. As he ages, he looks increasingly suave and sophisticated," the source explained, reportedly revealing what the "Bond bosses" are thinking.

This comes after several reports placed other actors like Tom Hardy, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, or Idris Elba in the same spot, with Complex noting that such report should be taken with the same light as the others had been.

Despite this, Complex revealed that there is an undeniable Bond-factor to the "Homeland" actor.

"Of course, we could definitely see Lewis as Bond, James Bond, mostly because of the mini-movie Jaguar commercial he did. It may not have been Aston Martin, but it definitely featured hot women, guns, eccentric villains and extreme 'Britishness,'" the report stated.

Here is the clip of the commercial the outlet is referring to.

Furthermore, many consider the 44-year-old "Wolf Hall" actor as the best fit for the role and betted on him, leaving bookmarkers no choice but to suddenly slash the odds from 25/1 to 3/1.

Before Lewis came into the picture, Idris Elba was the favorite bet for the highly-coveted role at a 5/2 odds.

However, this became an issue of contention for many particularly some of those directly involved in the franchise including screenplay writer Anthony Horowitz.

For those who missed the reports, Horowitz described Elba as "too street" for the role while talking about his actor choices.

"Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better. For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It's not a color issue. I think he is probably a bit too 'street' for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah," he stated as quoted by the Daily Mail.

After realizing how his statement had sounded, the 007 writers immediately backtracked and apologized for his poor choice of words, saying: "I'm really sorry my comments about Idris Elba have caused offense. That wasn't my intention."
