Floyd Mayweather Jr. could be leaning towards fighting rival Manny Pacquiao in a surefire mega-showdown next year, a source close to the situation reported on Thursday.

Mayweather, who has yet to announce his next opponent for his May 3 event in MGM Grand Garden in Las, Vegas, Nevada, has been on the assault on Twitter as he repeatedly made fun of Pacquiao, Carlos Maidana and Amir Khan by posting meme's and photo-shopped pictures that showed him dominating all three welterweight contenders.

Money May's holiday season posts have generated tremendous buzz on the micro-blogging site, but boxing analysts believed Mayweather is already showing everyone clues about the identity of his next opponent.

Khan, who captured world title belts in the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions, emerged as the favorite to take the Money May sweepstakes. Though the Briton has the fan base to make the fight a success business-wise, many boxing fans are not convinced that Khan is worthy to take on the universally-recognized best boxer in the world.

Maidana and Pacquiao have also put their names in the Money May lottery following their impressive victories in their last fights. Maidana is coming off a 12-round upset win over Adrien Broner, who many considered as the next big pound-for-pound attraction. On the other hand, the Pacman has made his successful comeback fight since absorbing a sixth-round TKO loss to Juan Manuel Marquez as he peppered California native Brandon Rios in their 12-round contest in Macau, China in November.

Pacquiao vs. Mayweather in the Works?

The Telegraph Boxing analyst Gareth Davis believed Mayweather's assault against Pacquiao on Twitter only means that the Grand Rapids native is leaning towards picking Pacman as his next opponent.

The Mayweather vs. Pacquiao showdown could have happened years ago, but negotiations between both camps collapsed because of disputes over random blood testing and fight purse sharing.

Now, Pacquiao seems convinced that there's no way to fight Mayweather aside from arranging negotiations with his camp personally. According to the latest reports on several boxing forums, Pacquiao is scheduled to travel to the United States in January and meet Mayweather with the hope of finally hammering down a deal.

Pacquiao was originally scheduled to make his 2014 debut in April, but he decided to move his next fight date to May with a showdown against Mayweather on his mind.

"That would be a great fight [with Mayweather], a great match up," Pacquiao told the Manila Bulletin earlier this week via the Telegraph.
