'Ant-Man' Sequel Confirmed: Evangeline Lily to Officially Debut as 'The Wasp'

Marvel has officially confirmed an "Ant-Man" sequel and this time, Evangeline Lilly will be making her debut as 'The Wasp'. The superhero film has been given a release date of July 6, 2018.

In a report with Comicbook.com, Marvel Studios made the announcement of an "Ant-Man" sequel following the success of the first one. The summer blockbuster followed the adventures of former thief Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) trying to get a shot at redemption following his release from prison. He comes upon scientist Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) who proposes that he take on the identity of the "Ant-Man."

The report also said that the upcoming sequel has also been given an official title, "Ant-Man and The Wasp" which means that Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) will be fighting alongside Scott as the powerful super heroine. It was teased in the mid-credits scene of the previous "Ant-Man" film that Hank shows Hope a modernized version The Wasp costume.

In the Marvel comics, Janet van Dyne who was Hope's mother was the original Wasp and she fought alongside her husband Hank. As "The Wasp", she has the ability to shrink to a height of several centimeters, grow to giant size, flight and was able to fire bioelectric energy blasts. As of now, there are no further details on a storyline or a possible villain.

The "Ant-Man" sequel would mean that a couple of Marvel films will experience a shift in their release dates. Black Panther, in particular will be moved up to February 16, 2018 while Captain Marvel will be pushed back to a March 8, 2019 release date.

Marvel has also announced three unnamed films to be released in 2020: on May 1, July 10 and Nov. 6, respectively said a post with The Hollywood Reporter.

The first "Ant-Man" film enjoyed both domestic and international success. The 2015 superhero film earned $178.5M in domestic ticket sales and $231.3M in the international market amounting a global total of $409.8M. It is currently one of this year's highest grossing films and is yet to be released in its final international market in China, which opens on October 16.

"Ant-Man" will next appear in "Captain America: Civil War" In the comics, Scott Lang might be siding with Tony Stark in the fight against Captain America.
