Amir Khan is considered the most likely opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr., in his next fight scheduled on May 3 next year, but a ShowTime Sports executive said recently that the proposed showdown is not yet set in stone.

Showtime vice president Stephen Espinoza told The Telegraph that Mayweather has yet to make a decision on who his next opponent will be, but he added that Khan is in the mix along with newly-crowned WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana.

"It is still wide open," said Espinoza on Mayweather's possible opponent in his next bout. "Floyd has not made a decision yet about who he is going to fight on May 3. Obviously, Marcos Maidana is making a late case and a strong argument for the fight, but Amir is definitely there in the conversation."

Espinoza added though that Khan is the leading candidate to land a money-spinning fight with the undefeated Mayweather, while also adding that he expects Mayweather to announce his next opponent by mid-to-end of January.

"Khan is definitely one of the leading contenders for the fight," Espinoza said. "I know Amir wants the fight. Floyd hasn't made a decision. I expect an announcement by mid-January or the end of January."

As for the proposed super fight with Manny Pacquiao, Espinoza said that he also wants to see the two fighters square off, but he admitted that there are several hurdles to overcome.

Espinoza reiterated that Mayweather's willingness to fight Pacquiao is not an issue contrary to the perception of boxing experts who are saying that Mayweather is afraid of the Filipino boxing icon.

"I know Floyd is not the issue. Floyd wants the fight. Floyd will fight Manny Pacquiao anywhere, any time. Unfortunately, there is a promotional conflict which is the issue," Espinoza said. "I'd like to say I'm optimistic but there is a lot of politics involved, a lot of history to resolve. Unfortunately, until Manny Pacquiao changes his promotional representation, I'm not optimistic that it can happen."

Mayweather previously said that the potential record-breaking fight with Pacquiao will not happen while the former pound-for-pound king is still under Top Rank Promotions, insisting that he will never do business with Bob Arum.
