Five actresses are nominated for the Golden Globe for their work in television comedies that leave viewing audiences in hysterics. Some of the actresses play characters in dark or satirical comedies, while others charm with their lighthearted, quirky charisma.

The nominees for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Comedy are:

Zooey Deschanel, "New Girl,"- Deschanel is nominated for playing up her signature quirky charm as Jess, a girl who moves into a loft in downtown Los Angeles with three guys after breaking up with her boyfriend. Jess is a free spirit whose peculiar habits fit in well with the three very different, very idiosyncratic roommates. This season, she goes "all in" in her relationship with Nick (Jake Johnson), a law school dropout turned bartender. Constant conflicts arise in the apartment as well as in the new relationship, but Deschanel is able to resolve them in her signature charismatic way.

Lena Dunham, "Girls"- Dunham is excellent at playing Hannah Horvath, a 20-something who is incredibly self-involved, has serious OCD and has delusions of grandeur. Hannah is a struggling writer in New York City, and thinks she may be "the voice of her generation." While Hannah is often insufferable, Dunham is wonderful at portraying her character's ability to speak to the fears and concerns of aimless 20-somethings everywhere.

Edie Falco, "Nurse Jackie" Falco is fantastic in the dark comedy that focuses on an ER nurse recovering from an addiction to prescription pills. Nurse Jackie is trying to navigate a health care system that is rapidly changing, and tries to be there for both her patients and her family. Falco's Jackie is a character who is trying to do it all, but has to make sure she can carry on without the help of her addictive helper.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "Veep"- Louis-Dreyfus continues to showcase her incomparable comedy chops as Selina Meyer, a former United States senator who assumes the role of Vice President. She is mostly powerless during the first season, and suffers different types of humiliation at the hands of other powerful elected officials. Yet, she begins to amass some influence during the second season, and is now a presidential candidate. Dreyfus is fantastic at seamlessly delivering the fast, irreverent and hilarious lines.

Amy Poehler, "Parks and Recreation"- Poehler's Leslie Knope has become one of the most iconic female comedic leads on television. Knope is a mid-level bureaucrat who is dedicated to making her small town of Pawnee, Indiana the best that it can be. Poehler is excellent as Knope, who is often blindingly idealistic, but always has the best intentions. Her continuing journey on the road to political power is the heart of the oddball comedy.

Prediction: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "Veep"

Louis-Dreyfus will most likely take home the award for her portrayal of Selina Meyer. Dreyfus is truly a comedy virtuoso who has the ability to deliver sardonic, biting one-liners while also doing ridiculous, slapstick comedy. Her believability as the driven, yet sometimes misguided vice president will most likely earn her the coveted Golden Globe.
