Millions of viewers--even those who don't have the faintest idea what a field goal kick is--will tune in to watch the 2014 Super Bowl, otherwise known as Super Bowl XLVIII. While some tune in for the famously memorable commercials, many stay tuned to watch the Super Bowl Halftime show, which is notorious for creative, shocking and always entertaining performances. This year, Bruno Mars will brave below freezing weather to perform at the show down between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. Will his halftime performance measure up to his noteworthy predecessors?

Here is a list of the the top 8 most talked about Super Bowl halftime shows-- the performances that Bruno will have to live up to.

8. Super Bowl 1996, Diana Ross

No one does it quite like a diva. Diana Ross performed at the 30th anniversary of the Super Bowl. She performed her greatest hits, and made one heck of a grand exit: she hopped onto a helicopter and flew off into the sky.

7. Super Bowl 1993, Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson changed the Super Bowl halftime show forever with his show-stopping performance of his greatest hits, including We Are the World, Billie Jean, Black or White and slew of other chart-toppers. His supercharged performance and signature moonwalk earned him a 90-second ovation.

6. Super Bowl 2001, Britney Spears, Aerosmith, 'N Sync and Nelly

The 2001 Super Bowl half time show was an amalgam of the most relevant musicians of the day, featuring Aerosmith's old and new hits, Britney and 'N Sync's mainstream pop and Nelly's rap stylings (it was around the time "Hot in Here" was popular). The unconventional, collaborative performance--and the elaborate fireworks--had people talking for weeks.

5. Super Bowl 2002, U2

Irish band U2 delivered a beautiful tribute to those who lost their lives only a few months before in the September 11 attacks. The band performed "Where the Streets Have No Name," "Beautiful Day" and "MLK" while the names of the victims were shown on a screen behind the band.

4. Super Bowl 2006, The Rolling Stones

The best rock and roll band in history had everyone out of their seats for their incredible performance. Mick danced around the stage in his usual spastic, yet effortlessly cool fashion while the band performed hits like "Start Me Up" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."

3. Super Bowl 2013, Beyoncé

Queen Bey gave a jaw-droppingly fierce performance with a medley of her greatest hits, along with fabulous dance moves. Destiny's Child even reunited for a few minutes during the show. After the show, for the first time in Super Bowl history, the power went off in the stadium, spawning many a joke about Beyonce's fierceness sucking the power from the stadium.

2. Super Bowl 2012, Madonna, Feat. MIA, Cee Lo Green, LMFAO and Nicki Minaj

Madonna gave a half time show to remember, which included costume changes, lightening fast dance moves and collaborations with LMFAO, Cee Lo Green and Nicki Minaj. While Minaj is often outrageous, the most controversial part of the performance came when British rapper MIA gave the crowd--and millions of viewers at home--the middle finger. However, the slight slip-up was forgotten in the midst of the glitter, voguing and elaborate props.

1. Super Bowl 2004, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson

Unsurprisingly, the prize for the most talked about super bowl halftime show of all time goes to Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, whose show featured Janet's infamous wardrobe malfunction. At the end of "Rock Your Body," Justin ripped off part of Janet's top, revealing one of her breasts. The incident prompted outrage from the FCC, as well as from some offended parents. While the "nipplegate" halftime show is now a distant memory, it tops the list of the most outrageous halftime shows...for now.
