The San Francisco 49ers are still undecided if they'll offer starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick a new contract.

ESPN reported that the 49ers are facing a dilemma in Kaepernick's contract situation, with sources saying that San Francisco could pass on offering the vaunted QB a new contract before the start of the 2014 NFL season.

Sources said that the 49ers are still weighing their options, especially after the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl with young quarterback Russell Wilson, proving that a young and inexpensive QB can lead a team to great heights.

An anonymous agent also said that passing on the opportunity to lock Kaepernick up this summer could also backfire for the 49ers next offseason.

Should Kaepernick—who led the Niners to two NFC title games and an appearence in the 2013 Super Bowl—take San Francisco to the Super Bowl next season, his asking price could climb far higher than his current paycheck, a situation similar to what happened with Joe Flacco. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback's value reached as high as $120 million for six years after leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl win in 2013.

"I wonder if the landscape for quarterbacks in the NFL has forever changed with what Russell Wilson just did and what happened with Flacco," an NFL agent said in the ESPN insider-only report. "Are you better off having young, inexpensive quarterbacks and trying to win with these guys?"

Kaepernick, who holds a 21-8 record including four playoff wins and one Super Bowl appearence in his first three seasons, could earn at least $20 million in the next two seasons—$1 million in the final year of his contract next season and around $19 million franchise tag in 2015.

Sources added that the 49ers could also offer a $15 million per season frontloaded contract to Kaepernick, and the 26-year-old quarterback could be amenable to that kind of setup.

Kaepernick previously indicated that he is willing to accept less money if it is the only way for the 49ers to stay competitive and financially flexible in the next several seasons.

"If you get to the $15 million range, you know you are taking care of him and you can make a big deal in the press saying Kaepernick could have held out for more, but, like Tom Brady, he wants to help his team," another NFL agent said. "Instead of $20 million over the next two years, he gets $35 million guaranteed. Call it four years and $50 million, with $38 million in the next 12 months if they can eat up that kind of cap space early."
