A 15-year-old transgender student in California admitted that he fabricated a story about being beaten and sexually assaulted inside of a school bathroom at the Hercules Middle/High School.

The teenager, who was born female but identifies as male, told police that he was assaulted by three boys earlier this week. A day later, he recanted the story after Hercules police launched a full blown investigation into the attack.

The 15-year-old student "admitted he fabricated the whole story" during an interview with a detective, said Hercules police Detective Connie Van Putten, according to USA Today.

"I'm just relieved that nothing of this nature did happen," said Charles Ramsey, president of the West Contra Costa Unified school board, reports the Contra Costa Times. "It would have been a tragedy. Sometimes a young person uses poor judgment, but we have to be compassionate and understand what motivated the student to want to do this."

The unidentified student had told officers he was leaving a boy's bathroom on campus when three other boys pushed him inside a large stall and physically and sexually assaulted him on Monday morning .

After police opened an investigation that included a sexual assault examination, they noticed that the facts did not support the boy's statement, including the time frame. He also lacked physical injuries to his head, face and hands.

The student finally admitted he had made up the story during a follow-up interview with a detective on Tuesday.

"We investigated this thing as a true crime. We went at it full force until we found out there was no crime," Van Putten said. "So people should know if they believe they are a victim of a crime, we are going to give them our full attention."

Mario Trujillo, spokesman for the West Contra Costa Unified School District, said school officials are less concerned with punishing the student for making a false criminal report than making sure he gets the support he needs.

The student's false report came as school districts in California are bringing their policies into compliance with a law that took effect Jan. 1 that guarantees transgender students the right to use restrooms that match their gender identity.
