Two people in Indiana were hospitalized after they shared a package of contaminated Skittles earlier this week. The candy eaters suffered from burning throats, cramping and diarrhea.

Health officials have discovered that packages of Original Skittles, sold at a Marathon Food Mart in Richmond, Ind., contained unknown chemical substances. The convenience store has since pulled the candy from its shelves while Skittles distributor Eby Brown has also put a halt on certain candies as a precaution.

The unidentified individuals ate the candy on March 4 and have been released from the Reid Hospital, reports Fox 59.

Currently, investigators are not sure how the package of Skittles became tainted. Samples of the colorful candies have been sent to the State Laboratory for testing. Health Department spokeswoman Amy Reel said that not much can be determined until the lab results come back.

Reel also stated that the Indiana State Police, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are working together to investigate the situation.

Health officials are advising anyone who purchased Skittles with lot numbers 08JUL14 023 or 01DEC14 023 not to consume the candy. Instead, they should put the candies in an envelope and immediately notify the Indiana State Police, reports NBC News.

Denise Young, a spokeswoman for Chicago-based Skittles producer William Wrigley Jr. Co., said that the company became aware of the incident late Wednesday evening. She also released a statement to the Associated Press, saying that their "first priority is [consumer] safety and we take this very seriously."
