Just when you thought spring was in the air, meteorologists predict that the Northeast and Midwest will be blasted with a late winter storm this week, with regions in the far north and west seeing a greater chance of significant snowfall Wednesday and early Thursday, reports CBS Boston.

On Monday, the Cascades, northern Sierra Nevada, northern Rockies and central Rockies, and lower elevations of Montana will be hit with less than a foot of snow, while the mountains of Montana and Idaho could receive up to a foot of snow, according to The Weather Channel.

The storm system will then move to impact areas in the plains and Midwest on Tuesday and Wednesday. The heaviest snow will hit northern and central parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and southern lower Michigan. More than 3 inches of accumulation are expected in parts of Illinois, Indiana, southern Lower Michigan and Ohio. Heavier amounts of snow--more than 5 inches--could possibly accumulate from central Illinois to northern/central Indiana and northern/central Ohio.

Parts of Pennsylvania, upstate New York and northern New England are expected to be hit with snow showers later in the week, around Wednesday into Thursday.

Altogether, more than 6 inches of snow may fall from northwest Pennsylvania to western and northern New York and northern New England. In addition, more than a foot of snow is possible from central New York to parts of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Although the snow will taper off during Thursday afternoon, it will leave behind a blast of wind and cold air through early Friday.
