Immigration Reform 2014: Fair Immigration Reform Movement Calls Boehner a 'Coward,' Urges Him to Pass Reform

A gathering of 80 immigrants and immigration rights advocates traveled to House Speaker John Boehner's congressional office on Tuesday to urge him to "show courage" and pass immigration reform legislation.

The group delivered cardboard medallions to his office with the word "courage" written on them, Fox News Latino reports.

The symbolic gesture was organized by the Fair Immigration Reform Movement, or FIRM. The group is urging Boehner to change the current immigration system because it separates hundreds of families each day with frequent deportations.

The activists came to Washington, D.C. from at least 20 states and marched through the halls of Congress wearing the "courage" medallions around their necks.

They dropped the medallions off at Boehner's office while calling him a "coward" for not allowing the House to vote on a new immigration bill.

While Boehner and other House Republicans released a series of immigration principles at the annual GOP caucus, there has not been any movement on immigration reform in the House. The majority of House GOP members are opposed to the Senate-passed comprehensive immigration reform bill, which was passed last June.

The protestors began their march at the summit on immigration reform that was held by FIRM on Tuesday and Wednesday. The organizers, who called the meeting the Keeping Families Together Summit, said the summit is being held just as the number of deportations during the administration of President Barack Obama reaches close to 2 million.

Leaders from different cities discussed new strategies for immigration reform at the summit, said Ricardo Ramirez, a spokesperson for FIRM. FIRM is a national coalition of grassroots organizations that fight for immigrants' rights at both the state and federal level.

The group is urging the House to pass comprehensive reform, although the GOP said it prefers to break up the legislation into separate bills. Above all, the group wants the GOP to pass a law that gives a pathway to citizenship for almost 11 million undocumented immigrants and curbs the rate of deportations.
