Floyd Mayweather Jr. vowed not to be too complacent in his upcoming showdown with Marcos Maidana on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, who will put his unblemished 45-0 record on the line, said that while he is confident that he'll remain unbeaten, he is remaining cautious because he knows Maidana can knock him out with a single punch.

The reigning pound-for-pound king said that Maidana is oozing with confidence at this point of his career after handing Adrien Broner his first defeat in their WBA welterweight title showdown in December last year.

"As I always say, 45 have tried, and 45 have failed, but Maidana is a special case, coming off that big win against Adrien Broner," Mayweather said, via BoxingScene. "He is a special fighter who can knock you out with one punch."

Mayweather admitted that he cannot overlook Maidana, saying that he will sit down with his trainers to map out a strategic fight plan to make sure that Maidana will end up becoming another fighter who tried but failed to hand Mayweather his first defeat.

"I have to fight strategically against a guy like Maidana, someone I cannot overlook," Mayweather said. "I will sit down with my uncle Roger and father [Floyd Sr.] and come up with a game plan that will make Maidana the 46th fighter to try and fail."

Mayweather also fired back at his critics, who are still claiming he took the easy way out by picking Maidana over British boxer Amir Khan, who was previously considered as the most likely opponent of the 37-year-old Grand Rapids native.

Mayweather, the reigning WBC welterweight champion, insisted that he made the right decision, and said he is confident that fight fans will get what they want on May 3.

"Maidana earned this opportunity to fight me," Mayweather said. "He gained my attention from his last fight, where he showed that he is a true champion, and is getting better with each fight of his career. He is a great champion, and so am I. When you put that combination together, you get a fight for the fans, a fight they want to see, which is my goal every time I fight."
