MLB Free Agent Rumors: Stephen Drew Still on NY Yankees Radar

The New York Yankees might still pull off a deal for free agent shortstop Stephen Drew, who surprisingly remains unsigned at this point of the regular-season, according to a source close to situation on Wednesday.

For the second straight season, the Yankees are hampered with injuries to their key infield players which have been cause of concern for the title-contending pinstripes. Add that to the looming retirement of slugging legend Derek Jeter, and the Yankees are certainly facing days of uncertainty, at least in that particular position.

MLB analysts have many opinions as to potential candidates that may become Jeter's heir apparent at the shortstop position. However, no one is more ideal player to fill the role of the future Hall of Famer than the 31-year old Drew.

Drew, who batted .253 with 13 home runs and 67 RBIs in his World Series-winning season with the Red Sox, is still on the free agency market despite drawing interest from multiple teams.

The Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets and the Detroit Tigers have all expressed an interest on getting him off the market, but none are gutsy enough to grant him the multi-year pact worth at least $14 million per season that his agent, Scott Boras, seeks for his client.

According to several baseball insiders, the free-spending Yankees could make a run for Drew, with the team not likely to make a move until the midseason trade deadline before New York general manager Brian Cashman pulls the trigger on a deal.

Though it's unlikely to see Drew still available in June, the Yankees may have a solid shot at the former Red Sox, especially if injuries and inconsistency at shortstop position continues to persist.

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner already stressed that it may not be necessary for the Yankees to make player movements at this time of the year, though he still opens a window of opportunity for a major acquisition to happen.

"So far, I'm pretty content with where we are," Steinbrenner told the press at a Major League Baseball-sponsored Diversity Business Summit via ESPN. "But I will always analyze options. That's my job throughout the course of the whole year."
