A strong earthquake with a 6.4 magnitude has shaken the capital of Mexico along with its southern Pacific coast and a number of inland states on Thursday which sent crowds of people running to the streets for safety.

Time reports that according to the U.S. Geological Survey, temblor in the southern Guerrero state had an epicenter estimated to be about 9 miles (15 kilometers) north of Tecpan de Galeana and about 171 miles (277 kilometers) southwest of Mexico City.

What was earlier reported to have been a 6.8 has since been downgraded to 6.4 in magnitude with a depth of 15 miles or 23 kilometers.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported but there are varying pieces of information coming in regarding the damage near the epicenter, cites The Huffington Post.

One of the damages sustained include the "collapse of a 30-meter (yard) section of Highway Bridge that was already under repair from last fall's flooding and a magnitude-7.2 quake in the same area in April. Flooding of the detour route from heavy rain Thursday left the federal highway between the resort cities of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo closed," concludes The Huffington Post.

Other damages include the collapse of three homes in Zijuatanejo and the collapse of dozens of simple adobe homes, shared Guerrero Gov. Angel Aguirre. Mudslides have also resulted on major highways, including the major road that connects Acapulco with Mexico City.

The USGS explains that "Mexico is one of the world's most seismically active regions" because it is located above three of the large tectonic plates. The organization further recalls that Mexico, given its location, has experienced multiple destructive earthquakes as well as volcanic eruptions. It cites the following previous events including a magnitude 8.1 in September 1985 that resulted in the death of more than 9,500 people in Mexico City. One of the most recent volcanic eruptions was from the Popocatépetl volcano which last erupted in 2010.

This is the second major quake in Mexico in less than a month. On April 18, a 7.2-magnitude quake with a reported epicentre about 40 miles (66 kilometres) shook central and southern Mexico.
