Reports are suggesting that the next PlayStation and Xbox game consoles might be out a mere 6 years from now.

The Examiner reports that according to Devinder Kumar, the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of AMD, the countdown until the release of the next-generation consoles will be shorter. "Our customers are already thinking about what comes next," the outlet quotes Kumar during a question-and-answer session at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Technology Conference on Tuesday.

AMD is the company behind the PS4 and the Xbox One's Jaguar CPU as well as Wii U's GPU. The company's exec adds:

"These are long life cycle products and as you know in the semi-custom space. Three years before you introduce a product, a decision is made to use a particular company. In this case it was AMD. And then you go ahead and co-develop the product with the funding dollars frankly, mostly coming from our customers. And then when you introduce the product, there is really no expenses from R&D standpoint, no sales and marketing dollars and whatever dollars you generate from a gross margin dollar standpoint, falls to the bottom-line and that's what excites us."

EA Studios EVP Patrick Soderlund also commented the same, reports Trusted Reviews. The outlet recalls Soderlund's remarks last year at MCV where he said that the PS5 and the Xbox 2 are more likely to be out faster than the seven to eight-year gap between the PS3 and PS4 and the Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

"Soderlund also suggested a five, six year gap before the Xbox One and PS4 successors are a reality," adds Trusted Reviews.

Should the next PlayStation and Xbox game console truly be out by 2020, the Inquisitr says that Sony and Microsoft may actually be ripping off gamers. "The first reason is that both the Xbox One and PS4 are not intended to be loss leaders except in the short run," explains the outlet.

The Inquisitr adds that another reason why the Xbox-maker and the PS-maker may be robbing gamers several hundred dollars is that the past-gen game consoles were better value for money. "The second reason is that if you compare the retail price versus the performance this current generation is lacking. If you look at console prices adjusted for inflation the Xbox 360 cost $348 in today's dollars and the PlayStation 3 cost $567," the outlet adds.

Finally, the outlet explains, "The third reason is that both the Xbox One and PS4 GPU are relatively slow and will hold back gaming... If we had been given the same value for our money for this generation then the GPUs probably should have been capable of outputting in the 2.5 to 3.0 TeraFLOPS range or higher."

Rip off or not, there's no stopping the rumor mill from churning. PS5 and Xbox 2 concept images were out as early as last year. Check them out here.
