Apple is rolling out a new version of iTunes Extras and the tech giant is bringing it back to Apple TV.

According to Variety, the new iTunes Extras "will let Apple TV users access bonus content for movies they buy through the service on their HDTVs." The feature was once made available on the said device but MacRumors says that iTunes Extras was "lost" in 2010 after the company "revamped" the Apple TV.

iTunes Extras was first launched in 2009, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. "The idea at the time was to convince people that they weren't missing out on anything by making the switch to digital downloads, although five years later it's become the preferred option for many homes," says the outlet.

With iTunes Extras, users who choose digital downloads will be able to get their hands on bonus content and features that usually come with their DVD and disc counterparts. The Sydney Morning Herald notes that bonus content can include "behind-the-scenes video content, directors commentary, short films and high-resolution photo galleries of storyboards or concept drawings."

Variety says that iTunes Extras is available "for several hundred titles" from studios such as "Disney and Pixar, Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, Starz Digital Media and A24."

Those who have downloaded movies from iTunes pre-iTunes Extras onto their Apple TV will reportedly receive bonus content for free, says MacRumors. The outlet quotes a statement from Apple saying "New iTunes Extras will be automatically added to your previously purchased HD movies as they become available - at no additional charge."

But, the Sydney Morning Herald notes that iTunes Extras is now only available for the HD version of movies. "To access iTunes Extras you need to ensure you've installed the latest Apple TV firmware update, and that your iTunes Store settings are set to HD movies," the outlet adds.

Apple TV users are not the only ones getting their hands on iTunes Extras as MacRumors points out that iOS 8-run devices will also be getting bonus content pretty soon. Variety says that Apple will make iTunes Extras available on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch by fall of this year.
