The voice actress behind Ellie of "The Last of Us" has spoken out about the Ubisoft game's all male cast and it seems that she isn't pleased.

Speaking with Video Gamer, the voice actress who won a BAFTA award for her Ellie role, said that she was "upset" with the male-only cast of "Assassin's Creed Unity." She adds, "'Assassin's Creed Unity' is a great example of when I saw the gameplay and saw that [in] their multiplayer you do not have the option to play as a female. I was like, 'Give me a fucking break! It's 2014! How many video games do you have to make to realise maybe have an option to have a female be in there?'"

Johnson remarked that she was commenting on the issue not only as an actress but as a female gamer herself, too. "I don't know what the percentage is at this point but there are a lot of females that play video games and it would be nice to see stronger females in a game that are not just the damsel in distress, the love interest or she's oversexualised. She doesn't even necessarily have to be a badass. Just like a normal female character."

Ubisoft has addressed the issue last month by stating their reasons for the female character/s exclusion. Speaking with Video Gamer in an interview at that time, Technical director James Therien cited "a lot of animation, a lot of costumes" as a few of the reasons.

Game Rant opines that a female character seems to have been regarded as "something extra" based on Therien's reasoning and that such character is only seen as a "feature." The outlet also said, "It's worth noting one of the most famous assassins of the French Revolution was a woman called Charlotte Corday, who stabbed Jacobin revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat in the chest as he lay in a bath."

Later on, Ubisoft issued an official statement. As quoted by Kotaku, the "Assassin's Creed Unity" publisher said in the statement:

"Assassin's Creed is developed by a multicultural team of various faiths and beliefs and we hope this attention to diversity is reflected in the settings of our games and our characters... With regard to diversity in our playable Assassins, we've featured Aveline, Connor, Adewale and Altair in Assassin's Creed games and we continue to look at showcasing diverse characters. We look forward to introducing you to some of the strong female characters in Assassin's Creed Unity."

The game is set to release October 28 on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Check out the title's gameplay and trailer in the videos below.
