"Ghostbusters 3" co-creator and actor, Dan Aykroyd, announced that the production of the movie may finally commence in spring.

The 62-year-old actor spilled the beans during Monday's episode of the "Today" show, RealityWorld.com wrote.

"It looks like we'll be in pre-production in the spring now, from what I'm hearing," Aykroyd shared with one of the hosts, Carson Daly.

Aykroyd will still star as Dr. Raymond Stantz, the role he portrayed during the first two "Ghostbuster" franchises.

The movie, which was first released in 1984, also starred Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver. The lead guys reprised their original roles in the movie sequel in 1989, reported Big News Network.

When Ramis passed away in February, "Ghostbusters 3" production was delayed, to the point of being shelved, reports say. The movie also faced financial hurdles. According to a Globalnews.ca article published on July 9, Aykroyd said, "Sony Pictures hasn't decided 'whether they want to drop $150 million on a Ghostbusters 3 right now.'"

"I think they should [but] I don't write that cheque," the Canadian actor shared with The Morning Show.

Original cast member, Murray, doesn't want to reprise his role. But will he have a change of heart?

One thing's for sure, though. Weaver, who portrayed Dana Barrett, will star in the movie again, as well as her on-screen child, Oscar, who was first seen in "Ghostbusters II." According to WebProNews, the actress told producer, Ivan Reitman, "I want my son Oscar to be a Ghostbuster, and he said, 'We've already done that.'"

2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the "Ghostbusters," and "the remastered and restored version will be shown on the big screen in 4K following the September 1 release of the Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary Edition and Ghostbusters II 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray," wrote Digital Spy.

"Ghostbusters is still one of our studio's most beloved franchises - I was lucky enough to work on the release of the film on its first run, so it's a real thrill for me to see that it's still connecting with audiences everywhere. On the big screen or in home entertainment, this is a great movie to experience again and again," Sony Pictures President Rory Bruer for worldwide distribution told Digital Spy.
