We reported earlier that credible rumors within the tech industry claimed production issues with the larger 5.5-inch version of Apple's new iPhone 6 would delay the "phablet's" launch, perhaps pushing it to some time in 2015. Well, that may turn out to be only half true. The latest reports suggest that Apple may be delaying the handset's launch on purpose.

BGR reports that industry insider Digitimes has learned that there have been no production shortages so far for Apple's first 5-inch+ phone. Instead, the rumor is that Apple will delay the larger iPhone's launch by "several months later than the new 4.7-inch model," Digitimes is reporting.

Apple apparently wasn't happy with the results it got from last year's simultaneous launch of the iPhone 5S and 5c, with 5S sales far outpacing those of its cheaper sibling at launch.

Digitimes' is also reporting what should be welcome news for fans of wearable tech, as the highly-anticipated iWatch--Apple's rumored first entry into wearable tech--is not experiencing any low yield rates with its production and should be ready for launch sometime this fall.

A RECORD LAUNCH?

Another report from the Wall Street Journal has confirmed that Apple has ordered from its hardware suppliers somewhere "between 70 million and 80 million" units of its 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6. If that's true, then this fall could see the largest iPhone launch Apple has ever attempted.

SOLVING THE DISPLAY ISSUE

In order to mitigate any issues with poor yield in screen production for this year's models, Apple has reportedly ordered from its suppliers 120 million iPhone 6 displays, and it wants them before the end of the year. Apparently this is an attempt to solve the "higher failure rate" for the iPhone 6's displays.

Another part of the issue with this year's iPhone display is the fact that Apple has decided to use the more durable (and more expensive) sapphire glass material for its construction.

Apple is also integrating a touch sensor within the liquid crystal display itself, in a bid to construct a thinner and lighter than other displays, which typically have a touch sensor layer separate from the display itself.

Just to compare Apple's hardware order from last year with this year's, last year saw Cupertino order somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 to 60 million iPhone 5S's and 5c's, and asked its suppliers to construct approximately 90 million displays.

The iPhone 6 (4.7-inch version) is rumored to be launching sometime in September, although, the official date for the launch event has yet to be revealed.
