As we've seen with other recent tragedies, it doesn't take the conspiracy theorists long to start pumping the usual brand of illogical paranoid nonsense out in the wake of an awful event.

The recent string of airplane crashes in Asia, Africa and the Pacific, heart breaking as they may be, are unfortunately prime fodder for conspiracy buffs, who usually take to social media to spread their "theories."

As such, we've compiled a few of the most outrageous claims made by people on Twitter regarding the downed Air Algerie flight which is reporte to have crashed in the Mali desert. Prepare your tinfoil hats, people.

Nevermind that BBC News has been covering this story since it broke. I guess if it isn't on every news show right away, then that must mean there's a conspiracy of some kind.

Most of these so-called theories are merely an attempt by attention fiends in order to garner a few retweets, and amount to little more than bad jokes made in poor taste. The above tweet is a perfect example of that.

What she's referring to here is a part in the HuffPo article that deals with some discrepency regarding the location of the plane wreckage. The Malian government claimed they'd found the wreckage somewhere in their country and the French military contradicted the government report. It's probably nothing, but you can check it out here.

This is an example of ignorance at its laziest. While Algeria is considered a Muslim country, the Air Algerie airline itself is owned by a Spanish company. Sorry, @EhScha.

It's amazing the kind of unsubstantiated, random nonsense that flies around immediately following a disaster or crisis. At some point this rumor was fabricated by someone, although we'll probably never know who.

Mariela Castro has been interviewed after this rumor got picked up by the media, which means she was indeed not on the plane. Unless its a ghost interview, and then, of course, #conspiracy.
