Los Angeles Lakers Offer Byron Scott Coaching Job: Is Scott the Answer to Laker Woes?

After 86 days of indecision by the Los Angeles Lakers, the team has extended a head-coaching offer to former Laker Byron Scott. The latest reports say that Scott has accepted the offer and that both parties are in the midst of contract negotiations.

Scott needs to hold out for a long-term deal, for fear of suffering the same fate as former coaches Mike Brown and Mike D'Antoni, whose tenures were cut short due to poor play on the court.

Scott was always the Lakers' first choice as head coach due to his history with the team, as well as his relationship with Kobe Bryant. As a player, Scott was a part of three NBA Championships during the golden years of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Laker fans are hoping that some of the former magic can rub off on the current roster.

"I think the Kobe relationship is going to play a big part," Scott told USA Today Sports in May. "Again, I think I've got a hand up on the job because of our relationship. We get along extremely well. Kobe knows all about me and what I'm about...So to me, it's going to be fun."

Laker fans will ultimately determine how "fun" the homecoming will be. While Scott is an established coach, winning Coach of the Year in the 2007-08 season, he has never gotten a team over the hump by winning an NBA Championship.

Though he has two NBA Finals appearances with the New Jersey Nets, the Cleveland Cavaliers fired Scott in 2013 after three straight losing seasons.

While Scott may be lacking championship trophies in coaching, he has proven his ability to turn teams around.

The New Jersey Nets were a disaster before Scott got them to a team best of 52 wins and two straight NBA Finals appearances.

The New Orleans Hornets were also in shambles before Scott turned the team around, entering the playoffs as a second seed. Byron Scott knows how to get the best of his players, even when the chips are down.

The Los Angeles Lakers are a powerhouse organization that does not tolerate losing. Scott would be a great addition for the average NBA franchise, but the Los Angeles Lakers are anything but average.

After Mike Brown was fired five games into his second season, coaches around the league realized that the Lakers mean business.

Scott will be under constant scrutiny even though his inherited roster will presumably be lacking talent. Depending on which Kobe Bryant shows up, Scott could be in for a short ride as the Lakers skipper.
