Ray Rice, who plays running back for the Baltimore Ravens and who has been suspended without pay by the National Football League for the first two games of this season due to a case of domestic violence, apologized on Thursday to his wife.

Last week, the NFL ordered Rice's suspension, saying that he violated the league's conduct policy during his fight with his then fiancée, Janay Palmer, Reuters reported.

"I am going to go out there and be ambassador against domestic violence to make sure that someone doesn't have to go through what I went through and what me and my wife went through," Rice was quoted by Reuters as saying.

According to the athlete, he also failed to say sorry to Palmer during his last public appearance because he became very emotional.

"She's a great mother and a great wife. She can do no wrong. She's an angel," Rice added.

According to Reuters, the NFL player was also fined with $58,000, bringing his loss to about $470,000 due to his suspension.

"It hurts that I can't go out and play football. But it hurts more that I'm going to have to explain this to my daughter some day, " Rice shared with Reuters.

It was noted in a Yahoo Sports report, that Rice also became emotional when his 2-year-old daughter was brought into the picture.

"One day she's going to know the power of Google. And we're going to have to explain that to her, explain what happened that day," Rice said.

He added that he let his family down and also a lot of people with what he did. But he defended himself, saying the violence was a "one-time" incident and that he has never done it before in his life and to other people.

"I am a man to say that I needed help. I am not afraid to ask for help," Rice told Yahoo Sports and admitted he needed counseling.

The NFL player, along with this wife and family, are planning to help victims of domestic violence, Yahoo Sports added.

"When the time is right ... me and my wife, we want to go out there and help people - anybody, violence of any kind. We will go out there and help as many people as we can and speak out against domestic violence."

The Rice family is already "moving forward" from the incident, with the athelete noting that it was the "biggest mistake" of his life.
