Caroline Wozniacki was blazing with energy and determination on Sunday as she outclassed Maria Sharapova in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 victory at the US Open.

In a match that lasted for 2 hours and 37 minutes, Wozniacki was on her way to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

"The season for me has been a little bit up and down and it's so nice to kind of start feeling like I'm playing the way I want to," she told CBS Sports.

The heat was surely a big factor in the game of these two female players as they were given a break before the start of the final set. Sharapova, according to CBS Sports, returned after arguing with the chair umpire for calling her for a violation, an action which was tagged by Wozniacki as a strategy to "dawdle between points."

"She takes one minute before first serve and then another minute before second serve," Wozniacki complained in an article by USA Today.

But the Danish player still emerged victorious against Sharapova and her victory was widely received by the audience as well as her opponent.

"She's very good at getting a lot of balls back and making you hit another one. In the end, I went for a little too much," Sharapova told CBS Sports.

Wozniacki, on the other hand, said she has kept in mind that should she lose, "at least [she's] going to do it with dignity."

The victor was initially known when she made the 2009 US Open final against Kim Clijsters but lost. CBS Sports noted that she became the world champ the following. Her last Grand Slam quarter final appearance however, was in 2012.

She also grabbed international attention because of her engagement to golfer Rory McIlroy. Wozniacki and the pro golf player's weddings plans were scrapped days after invitations were sent out because McIlroy was allegedly not ready for commitment.

Wozniacki is set to face Sara Errani next and USA Today is betting that the former will still be favored over her next opponent. The report also noted that she has become a favorite, alongside Serena Williams, to become the US Open Final champ.

If Wozniacki and Williams face each other during the finals, sports analysts claim that Wozniacki could stand a chance against the tennis star with her "swinging momentum." USA Today noted that Wozniacki was able to push Williams to a three-set game last summer.

The only thing to look forward to for the fans is Wozniacki's performance in her coming games as this would determine if she is back to her Grand Slam winning form and prove that she can be a consistent winner.
