2014 Primary Election: Texas Democrats Move to Mobilize Hispanic Vote

Texas is a stalwart bastion of support for the Republican Party, but Texas Democrats are mounting a formidable campaign to "Turn Texas Blue." Countering a nationwide Republican push to reach out to Latino voters, the Democrats in the Lone Star State are responding with an online campaign to strengthen their position locally through the large Hispanic population in that state.

"¡Pa'Delante Tejas!" is an initiative announced by the Democrats in October to rally the Latino vote in upcoming elections.

Now, perhaps more than ever before, Latinos in Texas are a demographic that both parties are striving to cater to effectively.

"The Latino population is growing and will become the majority in Texas in the next ten years," said Ada Ortega in a press release on the state Democratic Web site. "Yet why are we so underrepresented? Why are conservative groups in our state trying to draw lines on our state maps that exclude us from having fair representation in state and national elected offices?"

The release concludes by saying, "We are not just Latinos, we are Tejanos, and we're ready to organize and fight to elect new leaders who share our real values!"

The party has released a Facebook page under the championed moniker that provides readers with Texas-centric political news in both English and Spanish.

The Democrats are running filibuster star and State Representative Wendy Davis of Fort Worth in a bid to take the Governor's mansion for the first time since Ann Richards left in 1995. To win this election, the Hispanic vote has been deemed a must-have; and with a Latino voting base that is growing stronger every day, a solid push combined with a heavy turnout and winning over some support from across the aisle might be enough to tip the scales in the Democrat's favor.
