For those following the production narrative of Marvel's super hero movies, it has been roller-coaster ride of emotions recently. Less than 24 hours after he announced that Marvel Studios was working on Iron Man 4 on the Ellen Degenerous show, Robert Downey Jr. has already backpedaled on these statements.

Last night Downey made an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. In his interview, the man behind Tony Stark retracted the statements that he made earlier.

"There's no plans for an 'Iron Man 4.' There's no script for 'Iron Man 4,'" Downey said. The star went on to say that he believes Marvel Pictures does have a plan to make announcements in the future.

"You know, [Marvel's] very secretive about it."

As far as the question everyone wants an answer to, whether or not he would be reprising his role as Tony Stark in a fourth Iron Man movie, Downey did not give a straight answer.

"I'm going to do other stuff with Marvel. I'm still going to be involved with Marvel, and there's gonna be plenty of fun stuff to happen."

This is of course contrary to Downey going on Ellen earlier in the day and saying, "Okay, yes," there would be an Iron Man 4.

If it turns out that Downey will step into the red metal boots of Tony Stark for the last time when the third Avengers movie comes out in 2018, it is safe to say that he will be leaving the franchise at an all-time high. His portrayal of the multibillionaire turned armored hero has helped make Marvel Studios a global powerhouse, while also earning himself millions.

Avengers 3 is the last film on Downey's contract with Marvel, so any future appearances within the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond that movie would require him signing a new deal. Should he decide not to continue the role, Downey has said that he would like the character to live on through actors, likening it to the similar treatment that James Bond has received over the years.

While Downey continues to string along fans with regards to his future as Tony Stark, they may be able to look forward to seeing the character on the small screen rather than the silver screen.

Via an AMA reddit thread, Downey confirmed that he was actively interested in making an appearance on the ABC television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
