Mizoram Premiere League's (MPL) 23-year-old player Peter Biaksangzuala had to say goodbye to his football career at a very early age as he succumbed to his spinal cord injuries five days after Tuesday's match where he made a bad landing with a celebratory somersault.

The Bethlehem Vengthlang FC midfielder, according to Goal.com, was celebrating his goal against opponent Chanmari West FC when he landed on his head and neck and fatally injured his spine.

A video footage of the incident showed that Biaksangzuala was motionless when he hit the ground and his teammates who initially went near him to celebrate were struck with the accident.

Goal.com said that the player was immediately rushed to the Aizawl Civil Hospital where a CT scan revealed the damaged spinal cord. He was immediately taken to the intensive care unit where he died five days after.

Mizoram Football Association secretary Lalnghinglova Hmar said that the accident came as a shock to all of them especially that Biaksangzuala was one of the most valued players in the league because of his great contributions to the game.

"Peter was a very talented player who dreamt of playing in the national league," Hmar added.

In a post on its Facebook page, the MPL said that they will retire Biaksangzuala's No. 21 jersey.

"Peter was a defensive midfielder who had always been aggressive and hard working, a true team player. Like most defensive midfielders, he was excellent at reading the game, breaking up attacks and protecting his defenders. He was not known to score many goals," the Facebook post read.

It added that the soccer player's injury and condition was one of the most talked about topic on social media for the past days. "Fans, players and everyone who knew about the incident were deeply moved by his unfortunate accident and prayed for his recovery and survival."

His family, friends and fans visited him during the last days of his life to show their support and love for Biaksangzuala.

Bethlehem Vengthlang coach Danny Lalduhawma shared on the Facebook post how good-mannered Biaksangzuala was. "He always maintained his discipline on and off the pitch. I don't think there are many like him," Lalduhawma revealed.

His family, on the other hand, is very devastated with what happened to the player. Biaksangzuala's father,  P. Vanlalchhuana, said in the MPL statement that he wanted his son to serve God the minute he was born.

"His interest in football was undeniable so I allowed him to pursue his career in the sport that he loved. I feel he did a fine job and through football he somehow managed to speak to the heart of the people concerned . He maintained his discipline and stayed away from all the bad habits as far as I'm concerned and he set a good example for sportsmen which is important," the deceased player's father added.

The last rite for him, according to Goal.com, will be done Khawzawl which is 120 miles from the state capital of Aizwal.
