The new augmented reality game that comes with each and every PlayStation 4 console allows users to create a wide variety of content, but could end up revealing more of a user's living room than they ever intended.

The Playroom game works with the PlayStation Eye camera, which is sold separately, to mix a live feed of a user with various camera effects and virtual objects that users can interact with. While the app is supposed to be used in conjunction with users playing games, others have taken it upon themselves to be more creative and make original content such as a call-in talk show. However, as Kotaku reported, some users manage to use the game to record sexual content, including a possible sexual assault.

The incident in question happened when a user and his wife were using the service and streaming their experience on Twitch, the game video streaming service. After the wife passed out after a night of drinking, the man exposed his wife's breasts to the camera for 15 minutes before the camera went dark. When the feed return the women has completely naked. The man's account was immediately banned, and Twitch has reiterated that only gaming-related content is allowed in their terms of service.

This disgusting act could be grounds at least for domestic abuse, and opens up the flow gates of debate over what gamers let others see of their personal lives. While the account in question has been banned by Twitch, millions of gamers are able to share what goes on in their living room through apps such as Twitch and the Xbox One Kinect, which can record game DVR automatically along with video of the user and comes standard with each console. With millions of users potentially sharing hours upon hours of their personal lives, console gaming is entering a whole new era.

While we have already seen examples of how this service can be used to share lewd or criminal behavior, this could end up becoming a good thing for some users. Stories like the call-in talk show reveals that gamers can put this service to creative uses, finding new avenues to reach out and build a community beyond gaming. But most likely, streaming services such as Twitch TV (and YouTube, whenever it becomes available on the PlayStation 4) will end up showing the boring: thousands of gamers merely sitting on their couch playing games.

In this day and age of viral videos and instant celebrity, many might feel as though the new sharing options for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One may be a way to gain newfound popularity. That popularity, however, may come at the cost of revealing at best the mundane or, at worst, the horrific aspects of how people live, without a surefire way to halt or censor controversial content before it's out there.
